A Fantastic Week of Advanced Tree Surgery Training at Ground Up Training
It’s been another excellent week here at Ground Up Training in Epping, Essex, where we’ve been running a full schedule of advanced tree surgery courses. The week was packed with hands-on learning, teamwork, and professional development, and we’re proud to say that every candidate passed their assessments.
This week’s courses included:
Each course had four dedicated candidates, and it was great to see such enthusiasm and focus from everyone involved. The site atmosphere was positive, and the teamwork between trainees made for an enjoyable and productive week.
Training with Courant Equipment
Our climbing courses made excellent use of equipment supplied by Courant, giving candidates the opportunity to try out a range of professional climbing ropes, harnesses, and hardware. Using different setups during training helps arborists understand the performance and feel of modern equipment before choosing what suits their own climbing style best.
The Benefits of SRT (Single Rope Technique) in Arboriculture
As part of the LANTRA SRWP course candidates were introduced to SRT (Single Rope Technique) climbing systems — a method that’s becoming increasingly popular in modern arboriculture. SRT offers a more direct and energy-efficient way to ascend, reducing strain and fatigue compared to traditional doubled rope systems.
This approach allows climbers to reach their working position more easily, move smoothly around the canopy, and minimise friction on both the rope and the tree. Learning to climb using SRT gives arborists greater control, efficiency, and flexibility on complex jobs — making it an invaluable skill for professional tree surgeons.
A Week of Progress and Success
Alongside the climbing courses, our CS32 Felling Trees Over 380mm candidates developed tree felling techniques when dealing with trees over the chainsaws bar length, understanding cuts such as Keyhole Cuts, & Letter Box cuts. During the CS32, you also have to deal with hung up trees, and the process of winching them out safely.
Meanwhile, those on the CS41 Aerial Tree Rigging course practiced complex lowering and rigging systems designed for controlled dismantling of large limbs and whole trees. Aerial Tree Rigging systems such as, Tip tie’s, Butt ties, Cradles and also speed line and drift load transfers. All fantastic techniques used to lower timber safely in arboriculture.
It’s been a fantastic week of training, and we’re proud of all our candidates for their effort and success.
